Every person on the body has moles or pigmented or non-pigmented formations. Close attention should be paid to their size and structure. There are times when they turn into dangerous formations and can become a sign of a serious illness. About this on Thursday, November 17, Gazeta.Ru told doctor oncologist-dermatologist of the highest category of the clinic JSC “Medicina” Olga Mashkova.
The expert noted that human moles are hormone-dependent. They begin to appear immediately after birth or in the first years of life. Puberty – between the ages of 8 and 25 and during pregnancy in women – is the peak for the appearance of new moles. In middle age, their number may increase under the influence of excessive ultraviolet radiation. The main danger of moles for humans lies in their ability to be reborn. “At the same time, benign pigmented neoplasms of the skin are called nevi, and malignant ones are called melanomas,” Olga Mashkova noted.
The number of moles and their location on the human body does not in itself mean a high risk of developing melanoma. However, there are exceptions: for example, some nevi must be removed immediately. We are talking about moles on the feet, palms and mucous membranes. According to the doctor, this location of pigmented formations makes them the first to degenerate into malignant formations.
The doctor added that any mole on the body, face or scalp can also cause problems if it is large, has jagged edges, grows in size over time or is exposed to direct ultraviolet radiation. Mashkova believes that if a mole or the area of the skin around it began to hurt or become inflamed, the pigmented formation increased in size or changed color, nodules or dot pigment spots appeared on it, then you should be very careful about such symptoms and immediately consult a doctor.
The dermatologist will recommend removing the nevus if the mole looks like this:
• it is about the size of a large birthmark, usually over 1.5 cm;
• it has increased in size;
• she developed daughter formations – small nodules on the surface of the birthmark or in its circumference;
• she has increased or lost her uniform pigmentation;
• pigmented zones formed around the birthmark;
• dotted pigment spots appeared in the circumference of the nevus.
