Buying an artificial Christmas tree is more environmentally damaging than buying a live one. Ecologists near Moscow came to such a paradoxical conclusion. The fact is that artificial trees harm the environment both during production and during disposal. And natural trees do not cause any damage to the environment. In addition, they are always provided with a second life: they are sent to feed animals or used as material for making amusing souvenirs.
“Even if you use one artificial Christmas tree for 15 years, it will still be more harmful to the environment than 15 live Christmas trees that have been cut down,” says ecologist Irina Lebedeva.
She clarified that the purchase of Christmas trees from nurseries, where they are grown specifically for the New Year, does not harm the forest. The expert advised buying just such trees for the holiday, and after the New Year, she recommended that the tree be handed over to a collection point, from where they will be sent for processing.
And now about the lack of benefits of artificial Christmas trees. The main material from which most of the attributes of the New Year’s holiday are made is polyvinyl chloride. By itself, this chemical is not safe for health. And when heated, a completely frightening reaction occurs, in which the material releases toxic substances.
Rescuers are also sounding the alarm, noting that PVC has a high flammability. Despite the fact that other chemical elements are added to this plastic during production to reduce the effects of fire and heating devices, the risk is still very high.
By the way, by themselves, these chemical elements are also not safe. In the manufacture of Christmas trees, barium, tin and lead are used, which accumulate in the room for a long time and cause allergies.
