There are several types of cancer that can be hereditary, said oncologist surgeon Yulia Shubina. According to her, one should not forget to get examined, especially if someone in the family suffered from cancer.
“Cancer is only a type of malignant tumor, so in some organs in people it can be hereditary. For example, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, a certain type of thyroid cancer (medullary cancer) and some types of colon cancer can be inherited,” – the doctor said, her words are quoted FederalPress.
If your mother or grandmother has been sick in the family, you need to get tested for the genetic risk of developing ovarian and breast cancer, advises Shubina. As for thyroid cancer, it can be detected using a blood test for the hormone calcitonin. However, it is impossible to identify a predisposition in advance; the patient himself must remember and be regularly examined.
The doctor added that the formation of malignant tumors is influenced by the environment, but the main factor is cell mutation. If such a mutation occurs and the cell continues to divide, the changed cells will turn into a tumor.
