The lighting of the Olympic flame took place at the archaeological site of Ancient Olympia in Athens. It is believed that this is where the Olympic Games originated. On May 8, the fire will arrive in France.
According to Greek media, the ceremony was attended by about 600 dignitaries, including Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou and International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach.
At the beginning of May, the Olympic flame will arrive from Athens to Marseille. During the 68-day relay, the flame will visit 64 French regions, and will be carried by about 10 thousand torchbearers. The Olympic Games in Paris will take place from July 26 to August 11.
