CRITICISM – A new film traces the little-known story of these Moroccan Berbers who agreed to come and work in the mines of northern and eastern France during the postwar boom. Former miners who do not regret their choice testify with pride in a poignant documentary. Not to be missed on Arte, this Wednesday August 31 at 10:45 p.m., and on arte.tv

This green stamp on the chest meant the great departure towards France, towards the unknown, towards a life of ease, perhaps. “It’s hard to hear that today, but we were happy to be stamped”, explains a grandfather to his granddaughter. She actually struggles to understand it. This generation gap is also the subject of this beautifully titled documentary Life ahead of us. Interesting, but a little too wise in its form, it is taken from a report by Ariane Chemin du World published in 2020. These fifty-two minutes therefore tell the odyssey of thousands of Berbers – between 80,000 and 120,000 – who left their arid countryside in Morocco in the 1960s and 1970s to work in the mines of the north and from the east of France.
