THE OPINION OF THE “WORLD” – WHY NOT
Released in March in the United States, Everything Everywhere All at Once was, in a context of interminable post-Covid numbness, the nice surprise of this spring: with a limited number of screens, the film will have grossed more than 100 million dollars, becoming the biggest success of the production company A24 , better known for her demanding auteur films (Ari Aster, the Safdie brothers) than for her hair-raising blockbusters.
The recipe for such success is written in the title (“everything, everywhere, all at once”), the “Daniels” (Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan) have patiently ticked all the boxes of what we are able to demand from a major Hollywood spectacle: 100% Sino-American leading roles, following the Crazy Rich Asians (2018), by Jon M. Chu, coming to repair decades of lack of visibility, a baroque superhero film and a work of science fiction as sibylline as a film by Christopher Nolan, and, finally, a family comedy.
It all begins on a perfectly realistic site: that of a laundromat run by the Wang family. Exhausted, Evelyn Wang juggles laundry baskets and administrative paperwork and fears the imminent arrival of her father from China. Her visit is an opportunity to observe the sad spectacle offered by her family: Waymond, her husband, has not yet had time to ask her for a divorce, and her daughter Joy is, to the great misfortune of her mother, in a relationship with a daughter.
Alas, Evelyn counts her failures, observes her American dream cruelly shrunk in the wash. This first role is entrusted to Michelle Yeoh, a 60-year-old Malaysian actress who subscribes to action films – a strong choice. This is where everything gets complicated: one day, in front of the office of the tax inspector (Jamie Lee Curtis), Evelyn switches to another dimension and meets an alternative version of her own husband who explains to her that nside reality (the Alphaverse), there are many parallel universes where other versions of the self cavort. The opportunity for Evelyn to discover that, in another world, she is a movie star, a chef, a lesbian with hot dogs instead of fingers… To this is added, inevitably, a danger: a certain Jobu Tupaki (Evelyn’s own daughter), whose mind has been cracked through travel, threatens the integrity of the multiverse. In summary, the Wang family settles accounts straddling hundreds of different universes.
