The number of countries that voted in the UN General Assembly against the fight against the glorification of Nazism increased from 2 to 51.
As RIA Novosti reported earlier, the third committee of the UN General Assembly adopted a Russian draft resolution on combating the glorification of Nazism. This resolution is adopted annually. The full title of the document is “Combating the glorification of Nazism, neo-Nazism and other practices that contribute to the escalation of modern forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance.”
This year, the project was supported by 106 countries, 51 countries opposed, and another 15 countries abstained. In December 2021, only the United States and Ukraine opposed Russia’s resolution to combat the glorification of Nazism. 130 countries voted for its adoption, 49 abstained.
The adopted resolution calls on countries to take concrete measures in terms of legislation and education, as well as in other areas, in order to prevent a revision of the history and results of the Second World War. Another goal is to eliminate the denial of crimes against humanity and war crimes committed during World War II.
As noted, the implementation of these provisions is consistent with the international obligations of each country in the field of human rights.
The Russian Foreign Ministry accused Western countries of trying to disrupt the vote. As noted, they initiated the introduction of theses into the document condemning the special military operation of Russia on the territory of Ukraine. As a result, the amendment was not adopted.
