The capital is preparing for the Chinese New Year. This date will be officially celebrated in Russia for the first time. The capital celebrated the usual New Year relatively modestly: the mayor’s office canceled fireworks and festive concerts, and decided not to purchase new decorations in order to save money. But for the Chinese holiday, which is celebrated on February 10, Moscow has prepared a full-fledged program.
Kamergersky Lane and the Apothecary Garden have already been decorated with lanterns, garlands and floating dragons. Decorations should also appear on Tverskaya Square, Novy Arbat and Tverskoy Boulevard. In these same locations, from February 9 to 18, a large-scale festival will be held, within which concerts, master classes, lectures, tasting of Chinese food and a drum show are planned.
The Moscow Zoo also joined the celebration, says Bulat Nurmukhanov, head of the international interaction department of the Moscow City Tourism Committee: “Chinese New Year, Spring Festival or Lunar New Year – this holiday has different names. By the way, it is celebrated not only by the Chinese, but also by other Asian countries, as well as a number of peoples in Russia.
Muscovites and guests of the capital will be able to visit the Chinese food fair on Kamergersky Lane and take part in creative and culinary master classes. You can continue your cultural and gastronomic journey on Tverskaya Square and, for example, try Peking duck, homemade noodles or traditional pastries, and on Novy Arbat you can learn the famous Chinese game of Go. The Moscow Zoo has prepared an educational program dedicated to the fauna of China. From February 9 to 11, you can enter the zoo for free by dressing in a panda costume. All Catherines will be able to take advantage of the same opportunity, congratulating their namesake, baby panda, on the first Chinese New Year in her life.”
On the eve of the holiday, his Chinese colleague, Shan Dan Laozhen, will visit the Moscow estate of Father Frost. He also wears a red fur coat and a beard.
Will private establishments participate in the celebration? “Kommersant FM” contacted representatives of Chinese restaurants in Moscow and found out if they had a special program planned:
Founder of the Chinese News restaurant chain Stanislav Lisichenko: “Chinese New Year is the biggest holiday in the world because it is celebrated by about 2 billion people. In our restaurant we are launching a special New Year’s menu. We have a Chinese restaurant, so every New Year is a holiday for us. Both Chinese living in Moscow and Muscovites who work with the Chinese come. Of course, it is felt that the Moscow consumer market has joined in the New Year celebrations. We were asked to decorate the entrance areas of restaurants, and there were proposals to open outdoor kiosks in the city center.”
PR Director of the restaurant “Chinese Charter. Bar and food” by Yana Rurikova: “The restaurant is hosting an outstanding gala dinner on February 10th and 11th and we are currently sold out. We celebrate Chinese New Year every year, and this year we are seeing a lot of interest from Muscovites. In addition, our festive menus and gala dinners are included in the program of official Chinese New Year celebrations in Moscow.”
PR manager of the Mume restaurant Anastasia Chernova: “Where else to celebrate Chinese New Year if not in a Chinese restaurant? On the night of February 9-10, guests of our restaurant will be treated to a gastronomic journey into the world of modern Hong Kong cuisine. Now it’s probably becoming more popular, because if you remember, probably 10 years ago, Chinese New Year was celebrated differently. This year we invested directly in it.”
Chunjie or Spring Festival in China is celebrated on the second new moon after the winter solstice. In 2024, New Year falls on February 10th.
