The natural decline in the population of the Russian Federation decreased by 29%

In Russia, in the first six months of 2023, the natural population decline (the excess of the number of deaths over the number of births) decreased by 29% compared to the same period of the previous year. The indicator is fixed at the level of 272.5 thousand people against 383.8 thousand people a year earlier. This was announced on Friday, August 11, in the Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat).
During the same period, 616.2 thousand children were born in Russia, which is 3% less than in the first half of 2022. 888.7 thousand people died (1.019 million people for the same period in 2022).
In general, the population of Russia, excluding official statistical information for the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, as well as for the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, as of the beginning of 2023, decreased to 146.4 million people from 147 million at the beginning of 2022.
In July, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova announced the list regions of the country with low fertility. It included the Saratov region, Leningrad, Smolensk, Ryazan, Tula, Vladimir, Penza, Oryol, Tambov regions and the Republic of Mordovia.
At the same time, the birth rate in Russia in May increased by 1.3% in annual terms. 104.5 thousand babies were born in the country, while in May 2022 the figure amounted to almost 103.2 thousand. Before that, the birth rate growth in the country was noted in January – by 0.4%. This has happened for the first time since November 2021.
