The name of the BRICS will not be changed after the accession of six countries

The name BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) will remain the same after the invitation to the association of six more countries. This was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at a press conference following the BRICS summit in South Africa.
“Everything is for the name to remain, it has already become a brand. None of the newcomers to the ranks of the BRICS offered otherwise. It seems to me that everyone understands that it is better to leave everything as it is. This will emphasize the continuity of all our work,” he said.
BRICS countries signed final declaration following the summit. It was named “Johannesburg-2”. Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE received official invitations to join the BRICS. Full membership of new countries in the organization will begin on January 1, 2024. Later Lavrov explainedthat when making decisions on inviting countries, their weight, authority and positions in the international arena were taken into account.
The BRICS summit was held in Johannesburg from 22 to 24 August. Russian President Vladimir Putin participated in the summit via video link, and Russia was represented in person by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
