American entrepreneur, founder of SpaceX and new owner of Twitter, Elon Musk, said that his neurotech company Neuralink plans to implant the first person with a chip in six months, which will allow him to use a computer and phone hands-free. About it reported Bloomberg agency, citing a company representative.

Musk said ongoing negotiations with the US Food and Drug Administration have gone well enough for the company to set a goal of conducting its first human trials within the next six months.

It is specified that Neuralink is now working on improving the product, which consists of a tiny device and wires with electrodes, as well as a robot that cuts out a piece of a human skull and implants the device in the brain.

Musk explained that the purpose of this device is to help people who have suffered from the consequences of a stroke. Thanks to the device, they will be able to communicate by expressing their thoughts through a computer.

During his speech, Musk announced the company’s plans to also create chips that can be implanted in the human spinal cord. Thanks to this, a person who cannot walk will have such an opportunity, the entrepreneur suggested. The company is also working on an eye implant that could improve or restore vision, he said.

The technology startup Neuralink was created in 2016. For a long time, it remained Musk’s most secret business. The Wall Street Journal first learned about its existence in 2017. There were practically no details until 2019, when Musk showed a photograph of a rat with a brain implant. Later, in August 2020, Musk demonstrated live a pig named Gertrude with an implant. They put her on a treadmill, and a computer tracked the position of her legs, reading neural signals, and could recognize when she sniffed for a treat.
