Ángeles Bejart, mother of Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales, has gone on an indefinite hunger strike to protest the “inhumane treatment” of her son, reported Spanish agency EFE. The woman locked herself in the church, which is located in the city of Motril in southern Spain, along with her sister.
According to Reuters, the mother of Mr. Rubiales, at the beginning of her action, asked everyone to treat this situation with understanding, and also called all the sanctions against her son “a bloody hunt.” The EFE agency also notesthat the church hunger strike began on the same day that the RFEF scheduled an internal meeting on the Luis Rubiales incident.
Luis Rubiales kissed Spanish international Jennifer Hermoso during the awards ceremony after the Women’s World Cup final. According to him, he asked the athlete for consent to a kiss. Jennifer Hermoso denies this and calls the act of the president of the federation an act of “impulsive sexism.”
The International Football Federation (FIFA) has temporarily suspended Luis Rubiales from any activity related to football, and the RFEF has launched an internal investigation. On 25 August, the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Madrid also start investigation of the president of the RFEF on suspicion of sexual assault.
