As CNN recalls, Oscar Pistorius shot Steenkamp four times through the bathroom door of his home in 2013, denying that he killed her in a fit of anger and claiming instead that he mistook her for an intruder. The Paralympian was initially sentenced to 13 years and five months in prison.

June Steenkamp claims she is worried about the safety of other women after Pistorius was released on parole.

In her statement, she said that her daughter’s death has left a “huge hole” in her life that cannot be filled, CNN notes. Her statement was also read outside the South African Parole Board meeting by a family representative.

In a statement, Steenkamp said that while she has forgiven Pistorius, she does not believe his version of events.

“At the moment, I am not sure that Oscar has been rehabilitated,” she said in a statement.

“Rehabilitation requires someone to honestly face the truth about their crime and its consequences. No one can claim to feel remorse if they are unable to fully grasp the truth, says the mother of the dead girl. – If someone does not show remorse, he cannot be considered rehabilitated. If they are not rehabilitated, they are at high risk of relapse.”

June Steenkamp said she did not attend Friday’s parole board hearing because she could not “must muster the strength to face him (Pistorius) again.”

She also expressed concern about his pattern of violent and aggressive behavior.

“I do not know to what extent this behavior still exists or was evident during his incarceration, but I am concerned for the safety of any woman if this were not taken into account in his rehabilitation,” Steenkamp notes.

The athlete, known as “Blade Runner” for his carbon fiber prosthetic legs and once seen as an inspirational figure after competing in the 2012 Olympics, has become the center of a trial followed around the world.

During the trial, Pistorius pleaded not guilty to one charge of murder and a firearms charge related to Steenkamp’s murder.

Prosecutors argued that her killing was premeditated and that the shooting occurred after the couple had an argument. He often broke down in court, and his past behavior was scrutinized, CNN notes.

Pistorius was found guilty of manslaughter in 2014 and sentenced to five years. But a higher court overturned the conviction and a year later changed it to murder, increasing his sentence to six years in prison.

The decision was appealed by prosecutors, who argued that the sentence was too lenient. Pistorius’ sentence was increased to 13 years and five months by South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal in 2017.
