The Moldovan Orthodox Church remains a self-governing part of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), despite calls from certain clergy to join the Romanian Orthodox Church. This was stated by the official representative of the Metropolis of Moldova, Bishop Ioan Mosnegutu.
The decision to maintain the current status was made after a meeting of Metropolitan Vladimir with the rectors of churches and monasteries.
“At the meeting, a decision was made according to which the Moldavian Orthodox Church retains its current status. The clergy and people remain faithful to the Moldavian Orthodox Church and Metropolitan Vladimir. Discussions about joining the Romanian Patriarchate will no longer be raised,” Bishop Mosnegutu noted, his words quoted by TASS .
In early November, several Moldovan clergy expressed the idea of holding negotiations on joining the Romanian Orthodox Church and secession from the Russian Orthodox Church due to events in Ukraine. They accused Patriarch Kirill of “calling for bloodshed between blood brothers and brothers in faith, contrary to the teachings of the Orthodox Church.”
In September, the Bessarabian Metropolis of the Romanian Patriarchate, operating on the territory of Moldova, also called for conversion to the ranks of the Romanian Orthodox Church. Then Metropolitan Vladimir of Moldova criticized the position of the Russian Orthodox Church on the Ukrainian conflict, but did not call for a severance of relations.
