The Ministry of Transport specified the list of documents for the purchase of train tickets – Kommersant

The Ministry of Transport of Russia has specified the list of identity documents by which you can buy tickets for long-distance trains. The list is in order department, approved on September 5, 2022. It will come into force on September 1, 2023 and will be valid until 2029.

According to the order of the Ministry, train tickets can be purchased at the following documents:

• passport – domestic, foreign, diplomatic, official, passport of a citizen of the USSR, passport of a foreign citizen;
• birth certificate (for passengers under 14 years old);
• identity card of a soldier or sailor; military ID of servicemen and cadets of military educational organizations;
• a certificate of release from places of deprivation of liberty or an identity document of the convict;
• temporary identity card of a Russian citizen;
• residence permit of a foreigner or stateless person; certificate of return from the CIS countries; certificate of the foreigner’s travel to the embassy of his country;
• other documents proving the identity of a foreigner or stateless person.

At the beginning of 2024, Russian Railways, the Ministry of Digital Transformation and the Ministry of Transport are planning to conduct an experiment that, as Kommersant learned, will allow passengers on long-distance trains to confirm their identity using biometrics instead of checking passports. Suppliers of facial recognition systems note that the Russian Railways project will require a fleet of tablets. The Ministry of Digital Transformation specified that the introduction of biometrics will help to avoid situations when a passenger forgot his passport and could not board the train, “as well as increase the convenience and speed of identifying passengers without presenting a passport.”
