About 266 thousand people are in prison in the Russian Federation compared to almost 700 thousand ten years ago, said Deputy Minister of Justice Vsevolod Vukolov. He did not specify how much this number had decreased over the past year.
“That is, this figure is decreasing. Meanwhile, the problem of relapse remains,” Mr. Vukolov said during a visiting meeting of the Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation and State Building on the topic of resocialization of convicts (quoted from RIA Novosti).
The deputy minister said that in three years “a system of correctional centers has practically been created.” They employ about 30 thousand people, almost 50 thousand have passed through them. By the end of the year, the number of places is expected to increase.
By data FSIN as of January 1, 2023, there were 433 thousand convicted and arrested people in Russian colonies and pre-trial detention centers. Over the year, this number decreased by 32.9 thousand. A comparable decrease was noted in 2019 and 2020.
