The Russian Ministry of Justice introduced scroll unwanted organizations of Jehovah’s Witnesses registered in Ukraine, the USA and Germany. According to the register, the Prosecutor General’s Office made the decision to recognize them as undesirable on October 12. The reason is unknown.
The following are included in the register:
- German Wachtturm Bible und Traktat Gesellschaft der Zeugen Jehovas (“Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of Jehovah’s Witnesses Selters/Taunus”);
- Ukrainian “Religious Center of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Ukraine” (“Religious Center of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Ukraine”);
- American Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania.
In 2017, the Supreme Court recognized the “Administrative Center of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Russia” as an extremist organization, liquidated it and banned its activities in Russia. On June 7, 2022, the European Court of Human Rights recognized the ban on Jehovah’s Witnesses organizations in Russia and the persecution of their members as violating human rights. According to resolution court, the definition of “extremism” in Russian legislation is too broad, and therefore criminal prosecutions of believers were based on “vague formulations.”
