Lithuania is going to close two more checkpoints (checkpoints) on the border with Belarus. This was reported by the press service of the Minister of Internal Affairs of Lithuania, Agne Bilotaite, transmits TASS.
The Lithuanian Ministry of Internal Affairs intends to submit a proposal to the government to close the checkpoint in the settlements of Lavorishkes and Raigardas (“Kotlovka” and “Privalka” on the Belarusian side, respectively).
From August 17 to 18, Lithuania closed two of the six checkpoints on the border with Belarus – “Shumskas” and “Tvyaryachyus” (“Losha” and “Vidzy” on the Belarusian side, respectively). Government of the Republic approved this decision is on August 16th.
Bilotaite explained that such a measure was a response to the deployment of Wagner PMC fighters in Belarus. She allowed the complete closure of the borders with the republic if necessary. According to Bilotayte, in this case, only “a humanitarian corridor or a passage for diplomats” can remain.
At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus promised responsible and pragmatic response to Lithuania’s actions. Minsk considered the decision of the Lithuanian authorities far-fetched and politically motivated. The Foreign Ministry claims that in this way Vilnius wants to prevent citizens of Belarus from visiting under the visa-free regime. They added that they do not plan to make changes to the visa-free regime due to the increased load on the remaining checkpoints.
