Vaccination of adolescents aged 12 to 18 years has been temporarily suspended due to the Ministry of Health launching the third phase of clinical trials of the updated COVID-19 vaccine. This was announced at the press conference “Prevention of seasonal diseases in the autumn” by Alexander Gorelov, Deputy Director for Scientific Work of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor.
According to Mr. Gorelov, clinical trials of an updated vaccine against coronavirus infection with a new current strain composition are currently underway. Trials on adults aged 18 to 60 will last a minimum of 2 months.
“Depending on the results of the third phase, recommendations will be given on the use of the new vaccine in relation to adults, then there will be adults over 60 years of age, and then, if necessary, return to children,” said Alexander Gorelov (his speech was broadcast by “News”).
The RAS academician recalled that Russia has already created one coronavirus vaccine for adolescents, which has passed all clinical trials. This is the Sputnik M vaccine, registered in November 2022, it is 1/5 of the Sputnik V dose, which has been vaccinated for people over 18 years of age since 2020.
In September, the incidence of coronavirus began to increase in Russia. From September 11 to 17, the incidence increased by 48% compared to the previous week, to 11.5 thousand cases, while the proportion of hospitalized patients increased by 20%. Rospotrebnadzor said that there are no plans to introduce any restrictions throughout the country, as the increase in incidence was explained by seasonality. Despite this, the authorities of some regions announced the resumption of the mask regime, primarily for staff and visitors to medical institutions.
