The data of academician Vadim Pokrovsky about 1.5 million HIV-infected people in Russia have not been verified and are estimated, said Alexei Mazus, chief freelance specialist on HIV infection at the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, on Tuesday.

According to him, according to the Ministry of Health, for 2021 their number was 851,754 people.

58,788 of them were diagnosed with HIV infection in 2021 for the first time in their lives.

Mazus also said that the rest of the data mentioned by Pokrovsky “are not verifiable, are of a technical, evaluative nature and cannot serve as objective indicators reflecting the current epidemiological situation.”

According to him, now there is an optimistic scenario for the implementation of the state strategy to combat the spread of HIV infection in the Russian Federation until 2030: the actual indicators of the decrease in the incidence are ahead of the target ones.

Earlier, Vadim Pokrovsky, head of the specialized research department for the epidemiology and prevention of AIDS, of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, said that HIV was detected in 1% of the Russian population. According to the doctor of medical sciences, up to 1.5 million Russians are infected and the number of people diagnosed with HIV infection is growing.
