The Ministry of Foreign Affairs refused to consult with Tokyo on fishing in the South Kuriles

Further coordination of the marine fishery of Japanese fishermen near the Russian South Kuriles is not yet possible. The Russian Foreign Ministry warned its Japanese colleagues about this. It’s all about Tokyo’s anti-Russian sanctions policy. The Japanese embassy in Moscow has already received a notification about the impossibility of agreeing on the dates of consultations.

Tokyo, for its part, intends to seek the resumption of negotiations. They are suspended for the first time in 22 years. Agency Kyodo notes that this may adversely affect the catch and earnings of Japanese fishermen in the coming months. The negotiations were held within the framework of the Russian-Japanese agreement of 1998. It regulates Japanese fishing in the Russian territorial sea in the area of ​​the southern Kuril Islands.

Russian diplomats said they would not accept any objections from Tokyo on this issue. The Japanese were asked to first take steps to normalize diplomatic relations with Moscow. So far, the Land of the Rising Sun is demonstrating the most unfriendly policy. This is not only the imposition of sanctions, but also the expulsion of some Russian diplomats, as well as the active anti-Russian rhetoric of the first persons of the state.
