The Ministry of Education and Science of Russia from next year will begin to reduce the emphasis on the Russian language when recruiting for engineering specialties at universities. Minister Valery Falkov announced this at a meeting on training personnel for the domestic aviation industry.

The essence of the innovations is to accept for engineering specialties and directions only in mathematics, physics and computer science, and take into account the Russian language as an additional one. At the same time, Falkov emphasized that “we do not discard Russian” and called the announced systemic measure “quite revolutionary” for universities.

Earlier, the head of the Ministry of Education, Sergei Kravtsov, proposed to place an emphasis on admission for engineering education in mathematics, physics and computer science, and to reduce the emphasis on Russian for engineering specialties.

The total need of the enterprises of the Russian aviation industry now, as noted at the meeting, is more than 14 thousand people.
