The Ministry of Defense wants to set an age limit for contract soldiers upon mobilization

Russian Ministry of Defense suggested establish a uniform age limit for service during the mobilization period for all contract soldiers. According to the department’s initiative, the age limit during the mobilization period will be 70 years for all senior officers, and 65 years for other contract soldiers.

The explanatory note to the bill prepared by the military department notes that “currently, the legislation of the Russian Federation does not contain a norm defining the age limit for military service during the period of mobilization, martial law or in wartime for military personnel who entered into contracts before June 24, 2023.”

According to the Ministry of Defense, the adoption of the draft law will ensure the required level of staffing of the RF Armed Forces, while a decrease in the level of combat readiness and combat capability of associations, formations and military units will not be allowed during the military operation in Ukraine. “The bill applies to legal relations that arose from February 24, 2022,” the explanatory note states.

According to the current law “On Military Duty and Military Service”, the age limit for marshals, generals, admirals, colonel generals is 65 years, lieutenant generals, vice admirals, major generals, rear admirals – 60 years, colonels and captains 1st rank – 55 years, military personnel with a different military rank – 50 years. The law allows you to enter into a new contract for military service upon reaching the age limit. In particular, for the highest military ranks, the term is set by the president.

In August, the age limit for being in reserve is He was promoted for senior officers up to 65 years old (from 60 years old), for junior officers – up to 60 years old (from 55 years old), for those with other ranks – up to 55 years old (from 45 years old). For senior officers, the age limit was not changed – 70 years.
