The Ministry of Defense approved a plan to modernize the ships and vessels of the Russian Navy, sources said Izvestia in the defense department. It is argued that this is necessary to protect ships from surface and underwater unmanned vehicles.
According to the newspaper, the ships will be equipped with additional electronic warfare stations, special firing points and heavy machine guns. According to Izvestia, some ships have already undergone the appropriate modernization, including at least one landing ship.
The development of naval modular electronic warfare systems is underway, the newspaper claims. They can be installed on open deck areas. The system will be installed in standard 40-foot shipping containers. Project 22160 patrol ships of the Vasily Bykov type will be the first to receive the installation.
As noted by Izvestia, heavy machine guns performed well during attacks on the Russian reconnaissance ship “Ivan Khurs” in the exclusive economic zone of Turkey. In May, the crew repelled an attack with surface drones. As reported by the Ministry of Defense, all of them were destroyed from regular weapons.
