Trilateral naval exercises of Russia, China and Iran have begun in the Arabian Sea. This was reported in the press service of the Russian Defense Ministry.

“Today, in the waters of the Arabian Sea near the port of Chahbahar of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the trilateral naval exercise “Marine Security Belt-2023” was launched with the participation of the Russian Navy, the naval forces of the People’s Liberation Army of China and the naval forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the statement said.

The department noted that Russia will be represented at the exercises by a detachment of ships of the Northern Fleet as part of the frigate “Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov” and the medium sea tanker “Kama”.

It is specified that the exercises will take place in several stages. In particular, at the first stage, the participants in the exercises “on the cards will work out the drawing of episodes of the exercise on practical actions at sea, will conduct briefings and tactical briefings.” On March 16-17, the exercises will take place at sea, where the military will have to work out “the formation of an interethnic detachment of warships, joint maneuvering”, perform artillery firing in the daytime and at night, and also free the captured ship, and provide assistance to ships in distress. The exercises will end on March 18, after which the results of joint work will be summed up.

That Russia, China and Iran will hold joint exercises, the Chinese Defense Ministry said earlier. The ministry noted that the purpose of these exercises is to demonstrate the willingness of the participating countries to maintain security and ensure stability in the region.

Previously, the joint exercises of Russia, Iran and China under the name “Marine Security Belt” were held twice – in December 2019 and January 2022. In addition, the countries carried out joint activities in the Persian Gulf in August 2021 and in the northern part of the Indian Ocean in autumn 2022
