Slovakia will not send military aid to Ukraine after the victory of the “Pro-Russian” Robert Fico’s Direction – Social Democracy party in the last parliamentary elections. About it writes Politico newspaper.
Parties opposed to supporting Kyiv, according to the publication, are negotiating the formation of a new government after the elections. The Slovak Ministry of Defense had previously considered sending a new aid package.
“The outgoing bureaucratic government of Slovakia will no longer send military equipment to Ukraine,” the publication quotes a government spokesman.
In the parliamentary elections in Slovakia on September 30, the Direction – Social Democracy party of former Prime Minister Robert Fico won with 23.31% of the votes. The turnout was 68.4%. Western media previously called the politician pro-Russian, pointing to his position on Ukraine.
The former prime minister previously promised to stop military aid to Ukraine; he also criticized sanctions against Russia and threatened to veto Kyiv’s invitation to NATO. The FT newspaper indicated that if his party wins, Kyiv will lose part of Western support.
Slovak President Zuzana Caputova, according to Politico, asked Fico to form a coalition government by October 16.
After the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, Slovakia began to provide military assistance to Ukraine. In 2022, the country sent weapons worth 168 million euros there. In March, the President of Slovakia announced weakening support for Kyiv within the country.
