Israel intends to sell more than 200 obsolete Merkava Mk2 and Mk3 tanks to two foreign armies, the names of the countries were not specified. About it informs Israeli news site Ynet, citing sources in the country’s Ministry of Defense.
According to Ynet, the tanks were produced in Israel in the 1980s and 1990s and have not been used in recent years. The buyers will be two foreign countries, one of which is in Europe. The Ynet article highlights that Merkava tanks will be sold to a European country for the first time.
According to the publication, the deal is at the final stage of approval, it can be completed within about three months. Pentagon approval is now pending as some of the mechanical parts (engine) of the tank are American made. The amount of the transaction is estimated at several tens of millions of dollars.
Formerly Axios Portal informedthat Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu supported the policy of the previous government of the country, aimed at not supplying Ukraine with weapons, but only providing humanitarian assistance. During a recent speech in parliament, he explained that one of the reasons for this decision is that Israeli weapons could end up in the hands of Iran.
