A drama worthy of the pen of Saltykov-Shchedrin broke out in the administration of Shlisselburg in the Leningrad Region. The mayor of the city, Artem Zheludov, released from the Kresty pre-trial detention center, where he was held on charges of abuse of power, once free, stormed the city administration building. He took over his former place of work together with his “athletic-looking” henchmen.

The bullies kicked out the guards, threatening to break their heads, and blocked the entrance to the building with a chain. And Zheludov himself barricaded himself in the room where secret documents are stored.

In August, Zheludov was taken into custody for “exceeding official authority” due to permission to put into operation an apartment building. He was sent to the Kresty pre-trial detention center for two months. However, the term of imprisonment ended earlier – on October 5, the court decided that Zheludov was not such a dangerous criminal to be in custody. Instead of imprisonment, he was given a ban on certain actions. Then the judge did not yet know what his decision would turn out to be.

On the day of the “assault,” city administration officials had a meeting scheduled for 8 a.m. at which the issue of removing Zheludov from the post of mayor was to be discussed. The formal reason is failure to show up for work. According to the head of the settlement, Maxim Lashkov, the mayor was not at work on October 5 and 6, although by that time he had already been released from Kresty, which means he had no official reasons for his absence. So to speak, I left the pre-trial detention center and went straight to work.

The mayor, either already fired or not yet, had to be expelled by rescuers who used wire cutters to cut through the chains installed by Zhelodov’s henchmen. The police then escorted all the rioters out of the building, and by the afternoon the administration’s work continued as normal.

As a result, now, within five minutes, the ex-mayor was handed a resolution to remove him from office. Zheludov continued the exchange of “courtesy”: in response, he handed over a notice of dismissal of his acting Spartak Chkhetia.

Maxim Lashkov commented on the comedy with the break-ins and sharing of the MK chair: “We, the Council of Deputies, are waiting for explanations from him as employers. He must provide a court decision that states what restrictions he has, and then the commission will decide whether he can fulfill his powers with these restrictions.

In the meantime, the deputies decided to suspend him from fulfilling his obligations until the circumstances are clarified. He didn’t bring us anything today. We will resolve the issue in accordance with the law.

As for his actions yesterday, there were the prosecutor’s office, the investigation, and the police. They carried out procedural actions and took testimony from those who were present. I think that they will already make a decision within the legal framework. I don’t know yet whether he has been arrested or not. I don’t know where he is.”

And the Shlisselburg administration told us: “The Council of Deputies fired Zheludov. Now there will probably be trials. Spartak Bezhanovich will continue to serve as head of the administration.”
