True, it will not be possible to bring him to justice
Capital investigators have solved one of the high-profile mass media murders committed in Moscow in the 90s. It turned out who carried out a brutal reprisal against the general producer of the STS television channel, British citizen Christopher Rees in September 1999. The man was killed in an elite building on Tverskaya Street, where he rented an apartment. True, it is still problematic to prosecute a criminal under Russian laws: he is serving his sentence in another state.
As MK reported at the time, Rhys was 37 years old at the time of his death. He was actively involved in show business in the UK, in particular, he launched show projects for the Walt Disney company, and in the late 90s he moved to Russia and began producing programs on STS. On the last Monday of September, the TV boss did not come out to his driver, who drove up to the yard to take the boss to work. The driver called Reece’s colleagues, they opened the apartment with a spare key and found the mutilated corpse of the Englishman. The foreigner was cut with knives, poked with a fork, and, in addition, his head was broken with an iron.
The latest advances in science helped solve the murder many years later. Investigators compared the genetic material of the stranger remaining in the apartment (the killer, however, erased his fingerprints, but they still managed to find something). Having compared the databases, they found out that a native of the Belarusian Mogilev, who was only 19 years old at the time of the crime, was involved in the murder. He, like Rhys, had a genuine interest in the male sex. Actually, the men met in a specific establishment called “Barracks” on Presnensky Val Street. From there, the newly-minted friends proceeded to the TV personality’s apartment, where the guest had the idea to rob the foreigner. He stabbed Reece more than a hundred times, stole $250 and a cell phone and fled.
Identification of the killer, however, did not help detain him. It turned out that Dmitry moved to his homeland, where in 2009 he was sentenced to 16 years for another murder. Therefore, Russian justice can only wait until he serves his sentence to prosecute him for the massacre of an Englishman.
