About 4,500 civilians have been evacuated from Bakhmut (Artemovsk) and Soledar, Shakhtarsk Mayor Alexander Shatov said. He clarified that most of the evacuees were placed in the settlements of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR).

“At the moment, together with Soledar, there are approximately 4.5 thousand, plus or minus 100 people. These are those who were evacuated from these two cities. A small part of them left for the Russian Federation, all the rest are located on the territory of the Donetsk Republic. Most of them are waiting for the opportunity to return to their hometowns,” Mr. Shatov said on the air of the TV channel “Russia 24”. He noted that 200 people were accommodated in Shakhtersk itself.

Alexander Shatov clarified that the DPR authorities plan to bring Bakhmut into the area of responsibility of the Shakhtyorsk administration. “Artemovsk, Artemovsky district, all the nearest settlements, as well as the cities of Chasov Yar, Seversk – everything will be in the area of responsibility of Shakhtersk until city administrations are formed in these cities,” he added.

Before the start of the special operation, 10,490 people lived in Soledar, and 71,094 people lived in Bakhmut. Most of the inhabitants of these cities were evacuated by Ukraine.

Soledar was taken by PMC Wagner on January 11, 2023. The battles for Bakhmut have been going on since the summer of 2022. The first to take Bakhmut under the control of Russia on May 20 was the head of the Wagner PMC, Yevgeny Prigozhin. Then about taking the city reported Ministry of Defense of Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated “Assault detachments” Wagner “” and the Russian military with the completion of the operation. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky claimsthat Ukrainian soldiers still remain in Bakhmut. According to him, Russia did not take the city.
