The mayor of Kirkenes removed the Russian wreath to Soviet soldiers-liberators

A scandal broke out in the Norwegian municipality of Sør-Varanger after Russian Consul Nikolai Konygin honored the memory of Soviet liberating soldiers by laying a wreath at the monument.
According to NRK, this act of the Russian diplomat infuriated the mayor of the city, Magnus Meland. It is clarified that local authorities recommended that the consul refrain from participating in events related to the celebration of the liberation of the Norwegian city of Kirkenes by the Red Army. However, Konygin ignored these recommendations and laid a wreath at the memorial.
At the same time, the Russian wreath partially covered the Norwegian one, which was placed by the local authorities. Officials decided to remove the wreath installed by the Russian consul.
The Petsamo-Kirkenes operation was an offensive operation by the troops of the Karelian Front and the Northern Fleet, carried out against the German group in the Petsamo region and the Finnmark province in northern Norway from October 7 to November 8, 1944. The task of the Soviet troops was to liberate the villages of Luostari and Petsamo in order to destroy the main forces of the 19th Wehrmacht Mountain Corps, fortified in the Petsamo region, and subsequently advance on Kirkenes in Northern Norway.
