The Sukhumi winery has been idle for more than a month due to an increase in excise duty.

Interfax reported that the Sukhumi winery of the Wines and Waters of Abkhazia company has not been operating for a month due to an increase in the excise tax on wine materials.

The company’s chief winemaker, Valery Avidzba, said that the company’s management hopes that in the near future the situation will improve and the plant will start operating again.

“Previously, the Cabinet of Ministers of Abkhazia introduced a 30% excise tax on wine materials imported into the republic. Such actions had a very negative impact on wine production, since the cost of production increases significantly,” Avidzba noted.

He clarified that the plant has not been operating for more than a month and the management of the enterprise cannot pay wages to 300 employees.

According to him, the management of the Wines and Waters of Abkhazia company made an appeal to the authorities of the republic. Negotiations are currently underway.
