The Kremlin will inquire about the decision to open a monument to Joseph Stalin in the regions. This is how the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov commented on the news about the installation of a bust of the Soviet leader on the playground in Orlov.
According to a Kremlin official, such initiatives are the prerogative of local municipal authorities. However, the very news of the opening of the monument to Stalin turned out to be a surprise for the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation. “At the children’s park? To be honest, this is the first time I’ve heard this from you,” Peskov told reporters. “We will definitely ask who made this decision.”
Previously “MK” reportedthat on October 24, a monument to Joseph Stalin was erected at one of the playgrounds in the city of Orlov in the Kirov region. The great-grandson of Stalin and the great-nephew of Felix Dzerzhinsky were invited to the opening of the monument. Funds for the installation of a monument to the Soviet leader, on the initiative of the local branch of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, were raised by residents of Orlov. It is noted that in the place where today there is a children’s playground in this city, in Soviet times there was a monument to Stalin.
The administration of the Kirov region, in a commentary on the installation of the monument, pointed out the independence of the decision made by the head of Orlov. The proposal of the Ministry of Internal Policy to hold an open vote of citizens on the installation of a monument to the Soviet leader was ignored. Because of the incident, the Vyatka regional public organization of victims of political repression filed a statement with the local prosecutor’s office.
However, this is not the first time a monument to Stalin has appeared in Russia recently. So, in early October, a bust of the Soviet leader was installed on the burial grounds of victims of the Great Terror in the Tver region. In December 2022, a monument to Stalin appeared in Tatarstan: the monument was installed in a school yard.
