Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Russia (CC) Valery Zorkin spoke at the marathon society “Knowledge” as part of the international exhibition and forum “Russia”. During his speech, he stated that moving “to the right” is dangerous for Russia, and that this large state must be preserved “not for the sake of the state itself, but for the sake of its people.”
According to Valery Zorkin, Russia does not need to be “cut off by a blank wall” and install a “new iron curtain.” “Obviously, this is not necessary, and it cannot be done, generally speaking. There is no need to rush between extremes, on the one hand there is complete closure, and on the other hand there is open absolute space,” he said (quoted by TASS).
Mr. Zorkin noted that Russia “paid an exorbitant price for some much needed acquisitions in the field of freedom and law and order. “Well, will we again decide where to move, completely to the right or completely to the left? This resembles the trap of a death pendulum,” he added.
Valery Zorkin during his speech paid attention to the judicial system in Russia, saying that it is “cleansing itself” and “continues to work” to ensure true equality of all before the court and the law.
“If you think that the court is completely rotten, then how can you explain that at the present time there are 35 million cases in court? So people are coming. So, is everything rotten there? This is simply no longer possible. Therefore, it seems to me that the Constitutional Court is also in this plane, to gradually increase the rights and equality of everyone before the law, the court, equality,” he concluded.
According to him, corruption remains a significant problem in Russia, which has become “dangerous to people’s lives,” despite the fact that both the authorities and society are aware of the existence of this problem. Valery Zorkin noted that this problem is “a critical issue for our society, without solutions to which it is impossible to achieve the desired social agreement.”
