An unexpected circumstance changed the sentence of a participant in a trial in the Tverskoy Court of the capital, where three scammers were in the dock, selling fake cancer medicine to the capital’s pensioners.

As it became known to MK, the swindlers called under the guise of employees of polyclinics and informed the elderly that recently passed tests showed the presence of cancer and it was necessary to purchase an effective medicine. The dumbfounded pensioners transferred money to the specified account, but the promised courier with the goods never arrived.

For a year malefactors have deceived 14 pensioners. Elderly people transferred different amounts – from 80 to 400 thousand rubles. The total damage amounted to more than 4.5 million rubles. The villains were detained at the end of January 2020.

The organizer of the fraudulent scheme, a citizen of the Republic of Belarus, confessed to law enforcement officers that the idea came to him after watching videos on the Internet. After that, he managed to get databases of elderly visitors to polyclinics. Before calling, he always looked at the address of the nearby oncology clinic.

The victims were called by an acquaintance of a man who had a criminal record for drugs. By the way, he was the only one who sincerely repented at the trial.

The defendant said that he was very ashamed of his actions, and he regretted a thousand times that he had succumbed to the persuasion of his friends. A former drug addict with serious illnesses managed to start a family in which two children were born. The couple decided to take out a mortgage, and in order to pay it off, the man found illegal earnings.

This person involved in the criminal case was the only one who paid partial compensation to the victims – all deceived pensioners received 30 thousand rubles each.

The man’s wife was able to collect the money, it was to her that the defendant dedicated the last word.

As a result, the repentant former drug addict was sentenced to 3 years and 8 months in prison. After recounting the sentence, he was released right in the courtroom.
