A resident of the city of Brindisi in southern Italy found 23 million Italian lire in the house of his late father. However, he cannot use them by exchanging them for the euro, the Libero newspaper writes.
Italian lira is the currency used in the country until 2002. The man found the money in one of the paintings of the XVI century, belonging to his late father. The heir turned to the Bank of Italy with a request to exchange lira for euro. But they said that it was too late – the lira was changed until 2012, the period had long expired.
The man asked for help from the association Giustitalia, which defends in the courts the rights of citizens seeking to convert lira into euros. They note that the ten-year period for converting national currencies into euros was set only in Italy. They also believe that the period, according to the Civil Code of the country, should not be counted from the moment the currency was canceled in 2002, but from the moment the citizen has the amount. In the case of the resident of Brindisi, from the moment the cache was discovered. 23 million lire should be exchanged for 12 thousand euros.
It is worth noting that this is not the first such case in Italy. In 2016, a resident of the city of Udine found the same amount at home in an old desk. But, as the media wrote, he could not exchange them even after going to court.
