The IOC will check Isinbayeva and Tarpishchev for compliance with the ethical principles of the organization

The recommendations of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on the admission of Russian athletes to competitions also apply to Russian members of the IOC. In this regard, the IOC ethics commission intends to check them for involvement in the Russian armed forces and support for hostilities in Ukraine. This was announced at a press conference following the meeting of the executive committee of the organization, IOC Communications Director Mark Adams.

“In order to avoid applying different approaches to athletes and officials from Russia and IOC members from this country, the IOC Ethics Commission informed that two conditions from the IOC recommendations can be applied to members of the organization. The first is active support for hostilities, the second is contractual obligations with military structures. Only the period after February 24, 2022 will be taken into account,” said Mr. Adams (quoted by TASS).

The current members of the IOC are the president of the Russian Tennis Federation, Shamil Tarpishchev, and Olympic pole vault champion Yelena Isinbayeva. Mark Adams noted that the review will be carried out in relation to both current and honorary members of the IOC, which include former president of the Russian Olympic Committee Vitaly Smirnov and four-time Olympic swimming champion Alexander Popov.

In March 2022, athletes from Russia and Belarus were banned from participating in international competitions following the recommendation of the IOC. A year later, the IOC recommended that representatives of these two countries be admitted to tournaments, only those athletes who are not connected with the army, do not receive funding from the state and did not speak out in support of the Russian military operation in Ukraine can be admitted to the competition.
