The IOC suspended the Russian Olympic Committee – Kommersant

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has suspended the Russian Olympic Committee until further notice, it is reported in press release. The reason for the removal was the decision of the ROC to include sports organizations from the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions. These subjects have been part of the Russian Federation since September 30, 2022.
“The ROC’s decision to include four Olympic Councils in its membership is a violation of the Olympic Charter, as it violates the territorial integrity of Ukraine,” said IOC Communications Director Mark Adams (quoted by RIA Novosti).
According to the IOC decision, the ROC no longer has the right to act as a national Olympic committee. Also, the ROC does not have the right to receive funding from the international Olympic movement. The IOC reserved the right to decide on the participation of Russians as neutral athletes at the Summer and Winter Olympics in 2024 and 2026.
On October 5, ROC President Stanislav Pozdnyakov announced that the Olympic Councils of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions became members of the ROC.
