The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will not require Russian and Belarusian athletes to sign a document condemning the special military operation. James MacLeod, director of the Department of Relations with National Olympic Committees of the IOC, spoke about this on Tuesday, March 19.
He recalled that the IOC changed the conditions for participation in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, asking everyone who wants to participate in the competition to “agree with the peaceful mission of the Olympic movement.”
MacLeod stressed that this “applies to every athlete who goes to the Games and every accredited person” and there is no additional requirement to sign.
In December 2023, the IOC decided that athletes from Russia and Belarus will be able to participate in the Olympic Games in a neutral status, subject to a number of strict requirements. Those athletes who openly support the conduct of a special operation in Ukraine will not receive access to competitions, the committee emphasized.
The President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, emphasized that athletes cannot be held responsible for government actions. If they support them, they are subject to sanctions, and “if not, they should have the same rights as others.”
