Russian and Belarusian athletes who have qualified in their respective sports can compete in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris as neutrals. Corresponding Solution accepted International Olympic Committee (IOC).
At the moment, only 11 Russian and Belarusian athletes have qualified for the Olympics in Paris. Among them are 8 Russians and three citizens of Belarus. The IOC separately notes that 60 Ukrainians qualified.
Athletes from the Russian Federation and Belarus will be able to participate in the Olympics only in individual competitions; they will not be able to take part in team tournaments and sports, the International Olympic Committee explains. Also, any Russian and Belarusian national symbols will be prohibited at the Paris Olympics.
At the same time, the IOC emphasized that athletes who actively support the Russian military operation in Ukraine will not be allowed to participate in the 2024 Olympics, even if they meet the necessary qualification standards. Also, athletes who are “connected with the military or security forces” of the Russian Federation will not be able to participate in the Games.
Earlier, the International Summer Sports Federation approached the IOC with a request to allow Russians and Belarusians to participate in the Games in a neutral status.
Russian Minister of Sports Oleg Matytsin saidthat if Russians are admitted to the Olympic Games, 108 Russian athletes will be able to compete. However, the final decision on the admission of Russian athletes to the Olympics has not yet been made. At the same time, the President of the All-Russian Federation of Rhythmic Gymnastics Irina Viner statedthat Russian gymnasts will definitely not compete at the Olympics in Paris in a neutral status.
