The International Union supported the admission of Russian pentathletes to competitions in a neutral status

The International Union of Modern Pentathlon (UIPM) has announced its full support for the return of Russian and Belarusian athletes to international competitions in a neutral status based on the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). This was reported by the press service UIPM.

The UIPM Executive Committee at a meeting on April 19 decided that the union would follow recommendations IOC, published on March 28, on the admission to international competitions of athletes from Russia and Belarus. The UIPM will also create an independent group that will check Russian and Belarusian athletes for compliance with the criteria for neutral status, which the union’s executive committee will determine in cooperation with the IOC, the press service reports.
“UIPM reaffirms its unwavering support for the athletes of Ukraine and their communities, who have suffered horribly as a result of the invasion of their country by Russia with the support of Belarus,” the organization noted. UIPM stressed that the determination to support Ukrainian athletes remains at the same level as in February 2022.
On March 28, the IOC presented the criteria for the return of Russian and Belarusian athletes to international competitions. In particular, the Olympic Committee denied admission to “teams made up of athletes with Russian or Belarusian passports,” as well as those who actively support the military operation in Ukraine. IOC President Thomas Bach clarified that “active support” means not only “open solidarity” with the special operation, expressed, for example, in demonstrating the letter Z and statements on social networks, but also “belonging to the armed forces or national security agencies.”
After the start of the military operation in Ukraine, most sports federations removed Russia and Belarus from their membership. The first, back in the autumn of last year, the suspension was canceled by the International Boxing Association (IBA) and the International Fencing Federation (FIE). April 13 International Triathlon Union allowed Russians and Belarusians to act in a neutral status.
For the complete non-admission of athletes from Russia and Belarus to the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris publicly spoke 35 countries, including the USA and Germany. Mr Bach in reply saidthat governments should not decide who is allowed in and who is excluded from sporting events. On April 14, the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine published an official order banning the country’s national teams from participating in competitions where athletes from Russia or Belarus are present. In fact, we are talking about a possible boycott by the country of major international tournaments.
