The Council of the International Ice Hockey Federation has extended the suspension of the national teams of the Russian Federation and Belarus from participating in international competitions in the 2023/24 season under the auspices of the organization.
The decision was made on Wednesday, according to the organization’s website.
It is noted that “based on a detailed risk assessment conducted by a well-known company specializing in risk assessment, “the IIHF board determined that the re-inclusion of the Russian and Belarusian teams in the organization’s competitions is not yet safe.”
At the end of February last year, the IIHF Council suspended the Russian and Belarusian national teams from international competitions for an indefinite period due to the situation in Ukraine.
In addition, the IIHF took away from Russia the right to host the youth and adult world championships this year.
Thus, the Russian team will miss the third World Cup in a row.
