The Indian Ministry of Internal Affairs has proposed reintroducing criminal penalties for adultery

NDTV reported that the head of India’s Home Ministry, Amit Shah, has introduced a bill in the lower house of Parliament that would reintroduce criminal penalties for adultery.
Previously, according to a code dating back to British colonial rule more than 160 years ago, adultery was considered a crime. The law provided a penalty of 5 years’ imprisonment for men who had sexual relations with a married woman without her husband’s consent, but did not provide punishment for the woman.
In 2018, the Supreme Court of India overturned this rule.
Now the bill proposes to restore criminal liability for treason. Its content indicates that the norm will become “gender neutral”. This means that both men and women in India can face criminal penalties for adultery.
