Historian Harari: artificial intelligence threatens first of all democratic countries
Israeli historian and author of the bestseller “Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind” Yuval Noah Harari believes that artificial intelligence (AI) threatens primarily democratic states.
He believes that AI poses a great danger to “human dominance on Earth.” That is why the historian signed an open letter calling for a moratorium on research into software like ChatGPT.
Harari noted that AI provides a previously unseen opportunity to manipulate public discourse. “This poses a threat to democracies more than to authoritarian regimes,” he concluded, noting that democracies rely on public dialogue. “If the conversation goes into the hands of artificial intelligence, democracy is over,” Harari expressed his concern in an interview with the British newspaper Daily Telegraph.
And if AI falls into the hands of the rulers of totalitarian regimes, then the consequences, in his opinion, can be catastrophic. “I don’t know if humanity can survive this,” the historian worries again.
Another potential threat he sees is the loss of jobs by people. “The economic system will consider millions of people completely worthless,” the Israeli scientist predicted. “This will lead to terrible psychological and political consequences.”
