In his Twitter, the head of WhatsApp (owned by the recognized extremist banned Meta) Will Cathcart criticized the Telegram messenger. In his opinion, the WhatsApp competitor platform does not provide end-to-end data encryption and provides third parties with potential access to information even from “secret chats”.
“In their e2ee protocols (end-to-end encryption – end-to-end encryption.— “b”) no independent verification… Telegram lacks the real transparency adopted by most tech companies… Telegram blunders put people at risk,” wrote Mr. Cathcart.
The head of WhatsApp, when arguing, refers to the article of the publication Wired “The Kremlin has entered the chat”, which tells about the surveillance of anti-war activists by the Russian authorities using Telegram vulnerabilities.
Mr. Cathcart stressed that he is aware of the conflict of interest situation that arises when Telegram is criticized by him as a representative of the main competitor of the messenger. Therefore, he urged his audience to use any other “great messenger” with end-to-end encryption, but not to use Telegram.
Earlier, the founder of Telegram, Pavel Durov, repeatedly criticized WhatsApp publicly. Meta’s accusations against the messenger also related to the lack of security for WhatsApp users: “Since the creation of WhatsApp, there has been practically no single moment when it was safe,” Mr. Durov argued.
