Director of the Institute of Experimental Biology and Medicine of the N.N. ak. E.N. Meshalkina, Doctor of Medical Sciences Irina Zhuravleva told the portal “Gazeta.Ru”that the cultivation of donor organs in pigs is futile from a medical point of view, despite the scientific innovativeness of the process.
According to Zhuravleva, tissue engineering and 3D bioprinting make much more sense. The fact is that a human transplant, for example, of a heart from a genetically modified pig is possible, but this is a very expensive operation.
“We need to carry out the necessary genetic modifications to the pig, feed it, grow it … Imagine what these costs are,” the doctor said.
In addition, 3D bioprinting will not cause rejection reactions, since the cells are grown from the biomaterial of the patient himself.
Although scientists are not yet ready to print such a large functioning organ as the heart, Zhuravleva argues that this discovery is in the very near future – it will probably happen in the next decade.
