The head of the Supreme Court reported an increase in the number of prisoners released on parole

Chairman of the Supreme Court of Russia Vyacheslav Lebedev said that in 2023, courts began to release prisoners on parole more often. Accused and suspects, he said, were arrested less frequently.

“Compared to the same period last year (from January to September.— “Ъ”) the number of applications for parole from serving a sentence satisfied by the courts increased from 48% to 53%,” said Mr. Lebedev at a meeting of the Council of Judges of Russia (quoted from “RIA News”).

He added that in the first nine months of 2023, the court arrested fewer than 62 thousand people, which is 6% less than in the same period last year. According to him, 14% more defendants were placed under house arrest. Courts reviewed 28.2 million cases from January to September, which is 1.8 million cases less than in 2022 (-6%).

The number of administrative cases regarding the collection of taxes and fees has decreased by 5 times – from 3.5 million to 727 thousand, Vyacheslav Lebedev specified. Bankruptcies, according to him, were considered in court 37% more often, and the total number of such cases exceeded 1.5 million. Mr. Lebedev addedthat the Supreme Court will prepare a bill to simplify the bankruptcy procedure.
