The memory of those who gave their lives in the performance of professional duties will be immortalized

December 15 is the Day of Remembrance of Journalists Killed in the Performance of Their Professional Duties. On this day, we will remember those who gave their lives reporting on the front lines, in zones of armed conflict, and were not afraid to speak the truth about corruption, environmental crimes and abuse of power. Chairman of the Union of Journalists of Russia Vladimir Solovyov spoke about what events are planned for this day.

“We have been celebrating the Day of Remembrance of journalists who died in the performance of their professional duties for many years,” says Vladimir Solovyov. — The date was set by the Union of Journalists of Russia in 1991, when Channel One journalists Viktor Nogin and Gennady Kurinnoy died in Yugoslavia, in the vicinity of the city of Hrvatska-Kostajnica. Which cameraman Anatoly Klyan and I later replaced. And they worked there for many years. Therefore, this is a special date for me. Of the four of us, I was the only one alive. Anatoly Klyan died 9 years ago, on the night of June 30, 2014, near Donetsk from a stray bullet.

As our interlocutor says, on December 15, this memorable day, the Russian Union of Journalists is trying to gather the families of their deceased colleagues.

— We invite military officers. And this year those who work in the combat zone will come to us. And also those war correspondents who previously worked in armed conflict zones, as part of active fronts.

This year, since the Domzhur restaurant is closed, the collection is scheduled at 12.00 in the restaurant, which is located at Zubovsky Boulevard, building 4.

— Important information will be announced at the meeting. Recently the priest Father Vitaly (Ulyanov) and colleagues from the Moscow government came to see me. They told me that an amazingly beautiful military temple of the holy martyrs Anatoly and Protoleon would be built on Bratislavskaya Street, in the southeast of Moscow. And next to the main church, for 500 people, a chapel of St. Artemy Vertkolsky will be erected in memory of the fallen war correspondents.

As our interlocutor says, there will be a limit in the temple where the names of journalists who have died over many years will be listed.

— A charitable foundation has been created to raise funds, the co-chairs of whose board of trustees are Sergei Sobyanin and Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus’. This will be a place where relatives of deceased journalists can come to remember their loved ones. Where can we come to pay tribute to the memory of our colleagues? For us it is very important. Not all of the deceased journalists are Orthodox, but nevertheless we will remember them all.

On December 15, the Day of Remembrance of Dead Journalists, Father Vitaly (Ulyanov), who is the rector of this tent-type church, will come to the meeting. It is expected that the dome of the temple will be erected by Easter. The temple complex itself will open in 2025.

Vladimir Solovyov shares that he lived and worked in the Balkans for almost ten years. He remembers the amazing Holy Trinity Church in the center of Belgrade, which is also called the Russian Church. On the initiative of the rector, Father Vasily, a memorial marble slab was placed over the grave of Baron Wrangel, on which were engraved the names of Russian volunteers who died defending the Serbs. In this church, Vladimir Solovyov baptized his eldest daughter.

“I think that the names of the dead journalists will be indicated on the memorial plaque in the new temple. When Father Vitaly and colleagues from the Moscow government came to us at the Union of Journalists of Russia, we showed them our wall, on which, taking into account the recently deceased Boris Maksudov, 79 names and surnames of journalists who died in the performance of their professional duties are indicated,” Solovyov said.

We really hope that no more new names will appear there.
