The head of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, Alexander Kurenkov, chaired a meeting of the government commission for the prevention and liquidation of emergency situations and ensuring fire safety. As a result of the meeting, governors of regions where there is a risk of flooding were instructed to create reserves of water, food and basic necessities. The heads of regions were also instructed to prepare temporary accommodation centers for the population.

“The situation with the spring flood is under control of the state leadership. Our task is to take comprehensive measures to protect populated areas and provide assistance to the victims,” said Mr. Kurenkov (quote from the website Ministry of Emergency Situations). The minister also called on regional authorities to increase interaction with volunteer organizations.

A number of regions of Russia suffered from severe floods. A regional emergency regime has been introduced in the Orenburg region. Currently, 554 houses and more than 2.7 thousand household plots are flooded in the region. The authorities of the Altai Territory, the Kurgan Region and the Bolsheglushitsky District of the Samara Region also introduced a state of emergency.

In Kurgan, a preventive evacuation of residents of four microdistricts and several gardens has been announced. In Orenburg Orsk, water flooded several areas after a dam broke. In total, floods affected 34 regions.
