The lack of precipitation in May caused a partial loss of crops among farmers in the Kaliningrad region. In this regard, Governor Anton Alikhanov decided to introduce a state of emergency in the region. As Kommersant was told in the Ministry of Agriculture of the Kaliningrad Region, “according to preliminary estimates, the damage is 259 million rubles.”
“The absence of precipitation over the past three decades has led to a decrease in productive moisture in the root layer to 10 mm. This is a critical indicator, after which drought occurs, leading to crop loss. According to operational data, partial loss of agricultural crops has already been recorded on the territory of all municipalities on an area of 14.5 thousand hectares, Natalia Shevtsova, Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Kaliningrad Region, Minister of Agriculture, told Kommersant.
Ms. Shevtsova stressed that the heat and lack of rainfall for many farms in the region could cause an economic crisis – they will have nothing to repay loans, further develop production and generally carry out their activities. The introduction of the state of emergency is a tool to mitigate these consequences, she said.
